Simisola Bolatito Ogunleye popularly known by her stage name as Simi is a fast rising Nigerian R&B singer, songwriter, recording artiste, stage performer, model and a philanthropist. She was born on 19th April 1988 in Ojuelegba, Surulere, Lagos State in the south western part of Nigeria. She is currently 29 years old.
She is the last child in the family of four children. Simi grew up in Lagos as a tomboy before the separation of her parents when she was just 9 years old.
Simi completed her primary and secondary school education in Lagos, Nigeria and obtained her First School Leaving Certificate and West African Senior School Certificate. After her primary and secondary school education, Simi proceeded to Covenant University in Ota, Ogun State, Nigeria and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mass Communication.
Simi grew up dancing and singing as a member of her local church’s choir in Lagos until she wrote her first song at the age of 10 years old. Her professional musical career started in 2008 following the release of her first debut studio album titled “Ogaju” in 2008 which contained songs like “Iya Temi” and “Ara Ile” with the entire musical production from Samklef.
Her career came into spotlight in 2014 after she released “Tiff”, a song which was nominated in two categories at The Headies Awards in 2015 and further brought her to mainstream recognition. Simi is currently signed to X3M Music under which she released her latest studio album “Simisola” in 2017.
In January 2014, Simi released a hit single titled “Restless” which gained her new grounds and further earned her a record deal with X3M Music. On 9th January 2014, Simi released two singles titled “Tiff” and “E No Go Funny” with the songs receiving massive airplay and accepted generally among music critics. The video for “Tiff” was released on 30th August 2015 and was directed by Josh Clarke. The song went on to be nominated in the “Best Alternative Song” category at the 2015 Headies Awards.
In 2015, Simi won the award for “Most Promising Act to Watch” category at the 2015 Nigeria Entertainment Awards. In 2016, Simi released her second studio album with hit single like “Jamb Question” which later featured Falz in the remix. Simi has being listed as one of the artistes to watch out for in 2016 by NotJustOk.
In October 2016, she was nominated in the Best Breakthrough Act category at the 2016 MTV Africa Music Awards. On 27th October 2016, Simi collaborated with Falz to release the hit song “Chemistry” a project which was described by Oghene Michael of 360Nobs as an “experiment of the word art”.
In December 2016, Simi was nominated in three categories at The Headies Awards. In early 2017, Simi released her thirds and latest studio album “Simisola” which has two hit singles like “Smile for Me” and “Joromi”. The songs were released on 8th September 2017 and received positive reviews and went on to debut at number five on the Billboard World Albums chart.
Apart from singing and songwriting, Simi is also a sound engineer. She is credited to have mixed and mastered Adekunle Gold’s album “Gold” which was released in July 2016. Her music style is basically hinged in the rhythm and blues, soul and hip-hop genre of music.
Simi has been nominated for 17 awards, but finally won 8 awards. In 2015, she won Most Promising Act to Watch at the Nigerian Entertainment Awards. In 2015, she won Best Vocal Performance (Female) at the Headies Awards. In 2016, she won Female Artiste of the Year at the City People Entertainment Awards. In 2016, she won Choice Upcoming Female Artist at the Nigerian Teen Choice Awards.
In 2017, she won Best Collabo of the Year at the City People Entertainment Awards. In 2017, she won Best Afropop Female Artist at the Nigeria Entertainment Awards.
Simi is currently one of the richest and most influential female artiste in Nigeria with an estimated net worth of $500,000.
