10 Nigerian Celebrity You Didn’t Know Were Drug Addicts

In this article I will be sharing with you 10 Nigerian celebrities you didn’t know were drug addicts. Drug addiction is one that is not easy to break free from. Most celebrities who got addicted to the substance started using it to boost their confidence while some of them were pressured by peer groups to take it and look better in their eyes. While some don’t make it out of the addiction, others with determination usually do and live a better life. So therefore after a careful study and research I present to you 10 Nigerian celebrities you didn’t know were drug addicts.

1. Tonto Dikeh

In an interview with BBC Pidgin, the beautiful mother of one and Nollywood actress, Tonto Dikeh revealed that she once battled with hard drugs and that it brought about some setbacks in her life. She also said she wants to use her foundation to help in the rehabilitation of drug addicts so that they can live a drug-free life.

According to her words; “I recently went into drug rehabilitation because it’s something that has set me back a lot in life and I havent really talked about it in public. So given the fact that I am who I am today and I am clean, I want to take the ‘Say No To Drugs’ back to the streets through the Tonto Dike Foundation” she told BBC Pidgin.

2. Hanks Anuku

During his active days, Hanks Anuku used to be one of the most sought-after Nollywood actors in Nigeria. With his foreign accent, he became a household name and one of the people Nigerians look forward to in new movies. However, he left the Nollywood industry to delve into politics as he was made a special assistant to the then governor of Delta State, Emmanuel Uduaghan.

Well, it was reported that he couldn’t even work effectively because of the effects of drug abuse in his life. After a few years, during an interview, Hanks Anuku revealed that he sought God’s healing and received it at the Synagogue Church of All Nation officiated by the popular Pastor T.B. Joshua. Hanks Anuku reportedly relocated to Ghana, where he has naturalized and is now Nana Kwame. The actor earlier this year, was rumored to be dead, but the actor in an Instagram post debunked the rumors saying he is alive and kicking.

3. Toyin Abraham

Toyin Abraham despite her success in the Nigerian movie industry popularly known as Nollywood has been a victim of drug addiction. The actress told her story during the 2017 edition of Success Story Africa held in Lagos. According to her words;

“You need to stop bad habits. I was involved in a lot of vices and it became worse last year. I did drugs and I am not ashamed to say it because it is now a thing of the past. They say cocaine makes you high; I took a lot. I smoked a lot and I didn’t even know I looked horrible, because I was so skinny. If you came to my house last year, you would meet a lot of people and you won’t want to leave because we smoked, gossiped about people, and what have you.”

Toyin Abraham broke away from the cycle of depression and drugs when she found out that she deserved a better life. According to her words; “When I realized I deserved more…I decided to change my habits.”

4. Majek Fashek

Majek Fashek was one of the biggest musicians in Nigeria in the early 90s. His music was known worldwide and he was seen as highly talented and was once signed to Interscope Records. He was a guest on the famous “Late Show with David Letterman.” where he performed as the first African on the show. In 2015, news of his bankruptcy filled the air which synchronized with that of his admission into a drug rehab centre in Abuja.

During this period, a picture of Majek Fashek hopped up in the media and who ever that came across him will know that he is a man who needs immediate help. He looked haggard, forlorn, and ostensibly seriously battling ill-health, alongside a dangerous pastime of drug consumption. Unfortunately, Majek Fashek died in his sleep on 1st June 2020 in New York City in the United States of America. He was 57 and was battling esophageal cancer. His death was confirmed by his manager, Omenka Uzoma, on the late singer’s official Instagram handle.

5. Terry G
