Alex Usifo is a famous Nollywood actor, director, producer, investor, entrepreneur and a philanthropist. He was born on 16th April 1953 in Lagos State in the western part of Nigeria to Mr. Barnabas Usifo and Mrs. Patricia Usifo. He is currently 64 years old. His father worked with the Central Bank of Nigeria at different branches in the country and rose to a managerial level before retirement.
After a few years in Lagos, his family moved to the city of Ibadan in Oyo State in the western part of Nigeria where Alex Usifo had his basic education. Alex Usifo completed his primary school school education in Ibadan, Oyo State in the western part of Nigeria and obtained his First School Leaving Certificate.
After completing his primary school education in Ibadan, Alex Usifo proceeded to St. John Bosco Grammar School, Ubiaja, Edo State in the south southern part of Nigeria. After completing his secondary school education, Alex Usifo became independent and started working at the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria.
After five years of active service at the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria, Alex Usifo gained admission into St. Peter and Paul Major Seminary, Bodija in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria in 1978 to be trained for the Catholic priesthood.
However, in 1981 he left the seminary when he gained admission into the University of Lagos to study Mass Communication at a diploma level. As a student of UNILAG, life was very tough, difficult and challenging for him.
Due to his high level of poverty, he was unable to pay for his school fees, accommodation, text books and feedings. However, halfway through the course, he decided to call it a quit and packed all his things and decided to leave the school, but some of his course mates intervened and stirred up some strength in him, by encouraging him to exercise patience, that he would pull through soon, which he eventually did.
As time went by, an urge grew in him to make an impact with his voice. He began going for auditions at different media houses including Radio Nigeria in Lagos, Voice of Nigeria in Lagos and Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) in Ilorin, where he made it at the top list but was finally dropped because of ‘Quota System’.
After graduation from the university, Alex Usifo faced unemployment for many years. On the invitation of a friend and brother, Mr. Peter Okun, Alex Usifo attended a Deeper Life Crusade at the National Stadium in Lagos where he sincerely and desperately asked God for a change in his condition.
God spoke to his mind in that crusade and encouraged him to look inwards and use his talent. After that Night Crusade, Alex Usifo searched through himself and discovered that he has the skill of acting and that is how his acting career kicked off.
His acting career kicked off in 1984 when he played a major role in the tele-movie “The Return of the Native” produced by Ray Yusuf for NTA, Illorin. After that, he moved on to take lead roles in “Natas” and “Two People” on Lagos Television (LTV) produced by Baba Fashina. After that, he started going to NTA station in Victoria Island, Lagos, Nigeria to take part in the weekly television series “At Your Service”.
He was part of the NTA productions titled “Echoes of Life” and “Turning Wheel”. This entire incident took place between 1984 and 1987. Within this period, people began to take notice of him.
In 1988, Alex Usifo rose to fame after starring in the NTA soap opera titled “Ripples” a film produce and directed by Zeb Ejiro. Alex Usifo was already a celebrity before Nollywood was born in the early 90s.
Alex Usifo is a legend in the field of acting. He is a pioneer of the Nigerian movie industry (Nollywood) and contributed immensely to the growth of Nollywood in Nigeria. He had participated in stage plays like ‘Awero’ written, produced and directed by Larry Williams. This was staged at the National Theatre, Iganmu in Surulere, Lagos State, Nigeria. He also took part in Ola Rotimi’s play “Our Husband Has Gone Mad Again!” which was also staged at the National Theatre, Iganmu in Surulere, Lagos State, Nigeria.
He has also featured in radio plays and photo plays. He has even lost count of the movies he has starred in. In the late 80s to early 90s, Alex Usifo started a Modeling Agency in partnership with Nollywood director Andy Amenechi but later went solo.
He decided to establish Silver and Gold Productions which became the rave of the moment producing top-notch models including beauty Queens like Sandra Petgrave, Toyin Raji, among other top models in Nigeria. Some big names in the entertainment industry actually began their modeling career from his company.
After acquiring great success in the entertainment industry, Alex Usifo went further to complete his education. He proceeded to Ambrose Ali University Ekpoma in Edo State, Nigeria and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in English with a Second-Class upper division.
Thereafter, he went further to Ladoke Akintola University of Technology and obtained his Master’s Degree in English. The quest for more knowledge got him into Babcock University in Lagos State, Nigeria where he bagged his Doctorate Degree (PhD) in Information Resources Management.
Though Alex Usifo wanted to become a catholic priest, but he later changed his mind and left the seminary. He met his wife, Princess in 1990 and they got married in 1993. His marriage with Princess is currently blessed with four lovely children namely Sarah, Isaac, David and Osedebame.
Alex Usifo is an active member of the Actors’ Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Directors’ Guild of Nigeria (DGN) and Association of Movie Producers (AMP). Alex Usifo has acted in more than 250 Nollywood movies which include Okoro the Prince, Strong Men at Work, Trumpet of Death, Who Am I, Final Point, The Guilty, Azima, Silent Night, Desperadoes, My Love, Classical Fraud, Dangerous Sisters, etc.
Alex Usifo has won several awards both locally and internationally which include Best Actor (African Collaboration) at the Ghana Movie Awards, Best Actor at the Legends of Nollywood Awards, Lifetime Achievement Award at the Nollywood Christian Fellowship Awards, Excellent Achievement in the Movie Industry at the Niger Delta Awards, Outstanding Achievement in Nollywood at the Bells University Awards, Award for Excellence in Artistic Creativity, Rotract Club of Sagamu Inspirational Award and Nollywood Icons Award at the Nigerian Film Corporation.
Alex Usifo is currently one of the richest and most influential actor in Nigeria with an estimated net worth of $3 million.
