Bukola Elemide popularly known by her stage name as Aṣa (pronounced “Asha” in Yoruba) is a famous Nigerian singer, songwriter, stage performer and a recording artiste. She was born on 17th September 1982 in Paris, France. She is currently 35 years old. Aṣa was born in Paris, France to her Nigerian parents.
Her family returned and finally settled in Nigeria when she was 2 years old. Aṣa grew up in Lagos State in the south western part of Nigeria, where she completed both her primary and secondary school education and obtained both her First School Leaving Certificate and West African Senior School Certificate.
After completing her primary and secondary school education, Aṣa returned back to Paris in France where her life as an artiste took off. Aṣa was the only female child in the family and had three brothers. At a very young age she began to look after the house during her parents’ frequent absence. This is when Aṣa started to sing.
Over the years her father had built up a collection of records featuring soul classics and Nigerian music, including Marvin Gaye, Fela Kuti, Bob Marley, Aretha, Franklin, King Sunny Ade and Ebenezer Obey. Asa was said to have drawn inspiration from these music legends.
In 2004, Asa met her manager and friend, Janet who introduced her to Cobhams Emmanuel Asuquo, who in turn became her musical partner and producer of her first studio album “Asa”.
At the age of 20 years old and after completing her primary and secondary school education in Nigeria, Asa returned back to Paris in France to study at the IMFP school of Jazz music. Back in Nigeria, her first single, “Eyé Adaba” was beginning to get massive airplay in Nigeria, before she left for Paris in France. Asa later got signed to Naïve Records.
Asa partnered with Cobhams, Christopher Dupouy and Benjamin Constant to produce and release her first platinum selling album “Aṣa. The release of the album saw Aṣa topping her music chart across Europe, Asia and Africa and went on to win the prestigious French Constantine Awards in 2008, where she was voted Best Fresh Talent of 10 singers or groups by a jury of 19 music industry specialists in Paris, France.
In 2009, Asa released her second debut studio album “Live in Paris” with her hit singles banging in radio and television stations. On 25th October 2010, she released her third studio album “Beautiful Imperfection” which went double gold in France in 2011. The lead single from her second studio album “Beautiful Imperfection” is titled “Be My Man” and was released in late September 2010.
In August 2014, Asa released her fourth studio album “Bed of Stone”. Her fourth studio album “Bed of Stone” had lead hit singles like Dead Again, Eyo, Satan Be Gone and The One That Never Comes. She went on a world tour in 2015 to 2017 to promote her fourth studio album. In 2014, it was reported that before the release of her fourth studio album “Bed of Stone” Asa has already sold 400,000 albums worldwide.
In 2007, she made an appearance in “Kokoya” the soundtrack to the film “The First Cry”. In 2011, she made an appearance in “Zarafa” the soundtrack for the Animation movie “Zarafa”. In 2008, Asa won the prestigious French Constantine Awards. In 2011, she was nomination for “Female Artist of the Year” at the French Music Awards.
Asa is currently one of the richest and most influential female artiste in Nigeria with an estimated net worth of $3 million.
