Azubuike Chibuzor Nelson popularly known by his stage name as Phyno is a famous Nigerian indigenous rapper, record producer, songwriter, singer, stage performer and a model. He was born on 9th October 1986 in Abakpa-Nike, Enugu State in the south eastern part of Nigeria. He is currently 31 years old.
His stage name Phyno, which is derived from the word “phenomenal” was the nickname given to him by one of his high school friends named Emeka.
Phyno is originally from Anambra State in the south eastern part of Nigeria but grew up in Enugu the coal city state. He is very handsome, creative and talented. He completed both his primary and secondary school education in Enugu, Nigeria and obtained both his first school leaving certificate and senior school certificate.
After completing his primary and secondary school education, Phyno proceeded to the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT) in Enugu and graduated with a National Diploma in Public Administration.
Phyno developed an interest for music production during his secondary school days. He initially wanted to become a pilot, but was told that he could be a doctor. Throughout his high school days, Phyno focused all his attention in music and learned to play the drums and piano. He also learned to create his own rendition of every recording he heard.
In 2003, Phyno started his music career as a record producer for top artistes in Nigeria such as Illbliss, P-Square, Flavour, Mr. Raw, Bracket, J Martins, Timaya, Ruggedman and host of others. In 2007, he relocated to Lagos to pursue his career professionally in the entertainment industry. Phyno told Ifeoma Onoye that Mr. Raw is one of the few people he looks up to.
After listening to the advice of his best friend Illbliss, Phyno started rapping professionally and was signed into Sputnet Records Label. In 2010, Phyno established his own record label “Penthauz Entertainment” and released his first debut studio album “No Guts No Glory” in 2014. The album has hit singles like Ghost Mode, Man of the Year, Parcel and O Set featuring P-Square. He is renowned for rapping in the Igbo language.
In 2015, he released his second studio album “2 Kings” with hit singles like Oringo, Connect, Yayo, Asai and Nnunu featuring Stormrex. In 2016, he released his third studio album “The Playmaker” with hit single like Fada Fada, a Ghetto Gospel and Testimony used in appreciation to God almighty for uplifting him from grass to grace.
Phyno has won several Grammy awards both in Nigeria and abroad. In 2012, he won the Best Collabo of the Year alongside with Olamide at the Nigeria Entertainment Awards and Best Rap Single at the Headies Awards. In 2013, he won the Best Collabo award at the Headies Awards and Best Rap Artiste of the Year at the City People Entertainment Awards.
In 2014, Phyno won several awards which include Best Rap Act of the Year, Rap Artiste of the Year and Rap Album of the Year at the City People Entertainment Awards. That same year in 2014, Phyno also won the Most Gifted Hip-hop at the Channel O Music Video Awards. In 2015, Phyno was nominated for Best Hip-hop at the MTV Africa Music Awards. Phyno is currently a brand ambassador for “Airtel Nigeria” which is one of the fastest rising telecommunication in Nigeria.
Phyno is currently one of the richest and most influential artiste in Nigeria with an estimated net worth of $10 million.
