Professor Lazarus Edward Ekwueme popularly known as Prof Laz Ekwueme is a famous Nollywood actor, producer, musicologist, scholar, investor, entrepreneur, philanthropist and a traditional ruler of Oko Kingdom. He was born on 28th January 1936 in Oko, a small town in Anambra State in the south eastern part of Nigeria.

He is currently 82 years old. He is very creative, skillful, gifted and talented in acting and interpretation of movie roles and can fit in any character given to him by movie directors and producers in Nigeria.

Prof Laz Ekwueme completed his primary school education in Oko, Anambra State, Nigeria and obtained his First School Leaving Certificate. After completing his primary school education, Prof Laz Ekwueme attended Government College Umuahia in Abia, Nigeria and obtained his West African Senior School Certificate.

After completing his secondary school education, Prof Laz Ekwueme proceeded to Royal College of Music in London, United Kingdom and obtained a National Diploma in Music.  After that, he proceeded to University of Durham in United Kingdom and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music. Prof Laz Ekwueme is currently a professor of music. He has earned a total of 10 diplomas in music and drama. In 1962, Prof Laz Ekwueme obtained the professional teaching diploma from Licentiate of the Guildhall School of Music.

While studying in Britain, he embraced the theatre and started acting in some African films produced by BBC. He left Britain in 1964, and returned to Nigeria, where he took up a lecturing job at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. As a lecturer of Music, he was an important member in the Nigerian music department at University of Nigeria, Nsukka in Enugu State in the south eastern part of Nigeria.

In 1966, Prof Laz Ekwueme went abroad to obtain a postgraduate degree in Music Theory from Yale University in United State of America. He has taught music at various colleges and other few tertiary institutions in the United State of America. In 1974, he returned to Nigeria and obtained a teaching job as a lecturer in music at the University of Lagos, Nigeria.

He is a Nigerian musicologist and a professor of music. He has written many poems, proverbs, puns, journals, music lyrics, etc. In the early 1990s, Prof Laz Ekwueme joined the Nigeria movie industry (Nollywood) and rose to fame after starring in the Nollywood blockbuster movie “Igodo” a movie that brought him to limelight.

Prof Laz Ekwueme has acted in more than 100 Nollywood movies which include for Lords of the Game, Igodo, Senator, Love Story, etc. He is currently one of the pioneers of the Nigerian movie industry (Nollywood) and contributed immensely to the growth of Nollywood in Nigeria.

Prof Laz Ekwueme has won several African Movie Awards such as most prominent actor in Nigeria at Africa Movie Academy Awards and best actor in Nigeria at the African Magic Viewers Choice Awards. He has quit acting permanently and is currently a traditional ruler of Oko Kingdom in Anambra State, Nigeria.

Prof Laz Ekwueme is currently one of the richest and most influential actor and producer in Nigeria with an estimated net worth of $3.5 million.
