The local government area of Hope Izodinma, the Imo state governor has been invaded by unknown gunmen. According to reports from our credible source, the unknown gunmen stormed Omuma town in the Oru East Local Government Area of Imo State on Monday night and engaged in a gun battle with the police.

The attack led to the death of six bandits with three vehicles recovered. In addition, the police have also arrested eleven suspects in respect to the attack. Unfortunately, the attack led to the death of the Divisional Police Officer, CSP Fatmann Dooiyor.

The police spokesperson for the state, Micheal Abattam, who confirmed the development in an interview with Punch newspaper said that tactical units of the command where able to ambush the bandits and got eleven suspected bandits arrested while six bandits where shot dead in the process.

According to the words of Micheal Abattam, the police spokesperson in Imo state and I read; “On July 26, 2021 at about 4PM in the evening, armed bandits in a convoy of about three vehicles were repelled in Omuma Town in Oru East Local Government Area of Imo State.

”According to the Area Commander, ACP Benjamin Abang of Omuma Area Command, who stated that, based on information received that bandits were sighted moving in convoy into Omuma Town, he immediately alerted the ever-active tactical teams of the command who swung into action.

They ambushed and launched a surprising attack on the convoy of the bandits which resulted to the neutralization of six of the bandits while eleven of them were arrested and taken to the police station. Unfortunately, the Divisional Police Officer, CSP Fatmann Dooiyor paid the supreme price. He was gun down by the armed bandits.

The teams later recovered the three vehicles abandoned by the bandits and took them to the police station. The vehicles includes two Toyota Highlander SUV with registration numbers Abia MBL 517 AT and Lagos, JJJ 984 EL respectively and a milk colour unregistered Lexus Jeep and took them to the police station.

“Presently, the command’s tactical teams and Special forces led by ACP Evans E. Shem are searching the bush for possible arrest of other bandits that fled into the bush.”

The Police spokesperson also said the state Commissioner of Police, Abutu Yaro, had warned that bandits with a penchant for sporadic incursion from neighboring states should keep off the state or face dire consequences.

This is not the first time such an incident is occurring in the local government area as the governor’s home town had earlier experienced gunmen invasion, including the killing of no fewer than seven security operatives, attacking of police formation and razing of the governor’s residence.

In April 2021, unknown gunmen had invaded the governor’s house in Omuma in Oru East Local Government Area of Imo state. They set a part of the house ablaze and killed two security men who were on duty. One of the security men killed was said to be an operative of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

Sources were quoted saying that cars parked in the compound were affected by the fire. Villagers in Omuma said they woke up to see the palatial home on fire. According to a source who pleaded anonymity stated that two loud bangs were heard simultaneously from what seemed like dynamites.

Declan Emelumba, the state Commissioner for Information, who also confirmed the incident said the security men killed were on duty at the house of the governor in the village.

“It is not true that several security men lost their lives. About two security men on duty at the governor’s house were killed. NSCDC personnel was among the security men who lost their lives during the attack,” he stated.

While reacting to the attacks on police stations in his state, the Imo state governor, Hope Uzodinmma in April this year accused some aggrieved politicians for being responsible, insisting that some politicians wants to put him away.

The Governor who is from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) said the objective of the politicians is to destabilize his administration.

According to the words of Gov Hope Uzodinmma and I read; “What happened in Imo state last Monday is unbelievable. A group of hoodlums, of course sponsored by some known politicians in Imo state, decided to destroy public infrastructure and government facilities and attacked a correctional centre facility and also attacked a police headquarters in the state.

“But what is important to take home is for Nigerians to know of the plot by a group of aggrieved politicians to destabilize the government of APC. I have done some thorough investigation and I have a credible lead as to those who are sponsoring these activities of these hoodlums. We are working hard to ensure that the sponsors of these criminal acts must be brought to book,” he stated.

The governor also stated that members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) are not behind the attack. He noted that the hoodlums were hired from outside Imo state, noting that they only pretended to be IPOB members.

According to the words of Gov Hope Uzodinmma and I read; “My Political enemies who want my downfall tried to identify grievances of people in a particular area. They hire hoodlums from outside Imo state to kill me. They bring them in and disguised them to be IPOB members and they commit this crime and went away without any trace.

“It is not about IPOB. Yes, we agree, we have aggrieved IPOB members. But I can tell you; those who are doing these destructions, most of them were brought in from outside Imo state,” Gov Hope Uzodinmma stated.

The governor also stated that his administration has trained over 4000 youths on community policing. He said they will work with vigilantes group to support the efforts of security agencies and police to secure Imo state and its environs.
