Former media aide to Nigeria former President Goodluck Jonathan, Reno Omokri, has reacted to the appointment of Major General Farouk Yahaya as the new Chief of Army Staff. In a tweet which he made via his verified Twitter handle, and he wrote; “Perhaps Major General Yahaya is qualified. But Nigeria is very divided now.
The three arms of government are led by Northern Muslims, who also dominate the military. I’m certain there are also qualified Igbo, Middle Belt, or minority officers that Buhari could have appointed.”
Reno Omokri’s statement is coming following the appointment of Major General Farouk Yahaya as the Chief of Army Staff by President Muhammadu Buhari. Major General Farouk Yahaya appointment came just few days after the death of Lt-Gen Ibrahim Attahiru in a plane crash that occurred at Kaduna International Airport.
Major General Farouk Yahaya appointment was made known to members of the public in a statement by the Defence Headquarters. Major General Farouk Yahaya is of Regular Course 37 of the Nigerian Defence Academy. He was born in Sifawa, Bodinga Local Government Area of Sokoto State, though he hails from Zamfara State.
He started his training as a cadet on September 27th, 1985, and was commissioned into the Nigerian Army Infantry Corps on September 22nd, 1990. It should be recalled that a few days ago, Ohanaeze Ndigbo had sent words to President Muhammadu Buhari asking him to use this opportunity to right the perceived injustice against the South-East.
In a statement which was signed by the Secretary-General of the apex Igbo socio-cultural group, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, he said that they were not lobbying for the appointment of the Chief of Army Staff, but that they were asking President Buhari to make use of the opportunity to reverse the wrongs against the South-East, and that the President should break the spell and surprise those mounting pressure on him to undermine the South and reappoint the new Chief of Army Staff from the North. The group asked President Buhari to redeem the image of his administration and appoint the new Chief of Army Staff from the South.
Reno Omokri said that perhaps the new Chief of Army Staff, Major General Farouk Yahaya, is qualified for the job, but because of how divided the country is now, the new Chief of Army Staff should have come from another region. He said that he is certain that Igbo, Middle Belt and minority groups have qualified candidates that President Muhammadu Buhari could have appointed the new Chief of Army Staff from, instead of appointing another Northerner.
