Oladapo Olaitan Olaonipekun popularly known by his stage name as Dagrin is a famous Nigerian hip hop rapper, singer, songwriter, recording artist, stage performer, actor and a model. He has been described as one of the greatest indigenous rapper in Africa by several media organizations. He is popularly known for rapping in the Yoruba indigenous language. He is very handsome, gifted, skillful, creative and talented.
Dagrin was born on 21st October 1987 in Ogun State in the south western part of Nigeria and died on 22nd April 2010 in Mushin, Lagos State in the south western part of Nigeria at the age of 22 years old. He started his music career in 1994 until he died in 2010 at the age of 22 years old.
Dagrin before his death was a multiple award-winning Nigerian rapper. After his death, a documentary film about his life entitled “Ghetto Dreamz” was released in April 2011. He died of fatal accident at a very young age which many believes to be an untimely death.
Dagrin is originally from Ogun State in the south western part of Nigeria, where he completed both his primary and secondary school education and obtained both his First School Leaving Certificate and West African Senior School Certificate. After completing his early education, Dagrin relocated to Lagos to pursue his music career as a rapper. While in Lagos, he lived in Meiran, Alagbado, Lagos State, in the south western part of Nigeria.
His style of rapping was based on Yoruba, English and Pidgin English. In 2010 he was nominated for Best Album of the Year at the Nigerian Entertainment Awards for his popular album “C.E.O.” which has hit single like “Pon Pon Pon”. In 2010, he was also nominated for Best Rap Act and Best Collaboration with vocals at the Nigerian Entertainment Awards.
In 2010, he also won the award for Best Rap Album at the Hip Hop World Awards for his popular album “Chief Executive Gangster” with hit single like “Kondo”.
Dagrin has worked with several top Nigerian artists such as Olamide, Y.Q, 9ice, M.I, Iceberg Slim, Omobaba, Terry G, Ms Chief, Owen G, K01, Code, Mistar Dollar, TMD entertainment, Omawumi, Chudy K, Bigiano and Konga, amongst others. He has been associated with several top music producers like Sossick, Dr Frabz, Sheyman, Frenzy and 02. Unfortunately, he died on 22nd April 2010 after a fatal vehicle accident in Lagos State, Nigeria, at the age of 22 years old
Dagrin’s hit single such as “Pon Pon Pon” has some cultural significance, it talks about the life style of people living in several region of Lagos such as Agege, Ifewara, Mushin, Ikeja, Surulere, Isale Eko, and many other parts of Lagos which is located at the south western part of Nigeria, where life in the slums mixes up with life in the affluent cities and parts of Lagos, Nigeria. His songs touch upon ethnicity and pride, while surviving the streets of Lagos and a hint of criticism elderly people hurls against bad behavior.
Most of his music video proudly displays young people in their twenties and early thirties proudly displaying their tribal marks in retrospect of the old Yoruba Empire of Ile-Ife in Osun State in the south western part of Nigeria.
In 2011, a documentary film of his life titled “Ghetto Dreamz” starring Trybson Dudukoko and Doris Simeon-Ademinokan as his girlfriend was produced and was released in April 2011.
In 2010, Dagrin won the award for Best Rap Album of the Year at the Hip Hop World Awards. In 2010, he also won the award for Artist of the Year at the Hip Hop World Awards.
Dagrin before his death was one of the richest and most influential artist and hip hop rapper in Nigeria with an estimated net worth of $1.5 million.
