Five Persons Have Been Arrested For The Attack On Police Station In Owerri

Earlier today, there was a report of an attack on the Orji Divisional Police Headquarters in Owerri metropolis. As observed in some of the viral videos trending on Twitter, the Unknown Gunmen behind the attack were seen parading the streets of Owerri in broad daylight, with heavy arms.

The attack which is coming barely few days after the State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma vowed to crush anyone who attempts to attack Imo State again saw people within the area, scampering for safety.

Following the attack, the Police have arrested five people who are alleged to be members of the group that carried out the attack. According to a report obtained from Channels TV, Mr. Bala Elkana, the Police Public Relations Officer in Imo State, confirmed the incident in a statement. However, those arrested by the security operatives include Chigaemezu Sabastine, Casmir Ibe, John Chinonso, Chukwudi Okoro, and Alozie Daberechi.

It should be recalled that the Orji Police Station was also burnt down during the #ENDSARS protest which rocked the country around October, 2020. Since April 2021 till date, several Police Stations have been attacked and burnt down by Unknown Gunmen Operating across the South East region. Imo State has been at the centre of these attacks, with Owerri and Orlu being the worst hit.

The arrest of these five people who are alleged to be among the group that attacked Orji Police Station today, is coming few days after Governor Hope Uzodinma revealed that over 400 people who took part in the attacks in Imo State have been arrested and are undergoing Court trials. Although the Governor went further to alleged that over 70% of those arrested are not Igbos.
