Dandruff is a common skin condition that affects everybody regardless of the age; it can be caused be increased number of oil production, weakened immune system, dry skin allergic reaction to hair and skin care products and increased number of yeast on the scalp. Dandruff can also be seen in areas of the body with hair follicles such as the eyebrow, beard, chest etc.
Common symptoms of dandruff are itchy scalp, white flakes on hair, scaly skin by the eyebrows or ears.
1. Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil has powerful antimicrobial properties that can help reduce dandruff by eliminating the growth of bacteria and fungi on the scalp and help bring shine back to your hair. This oil treats dry scalp, moisturize and soothe scalp by preventing dryness and getting rid of blocked pores. Its antifungal properties make it a great remedy for treating dandruff since it is caused by an overgrowth of yeast. Mix a few drops of this oil to your shampoo and massage on wet hair, rinse and apply your hair conditioner.
2. Coconut Oil
This oil has anti-inflammatory properties that reduce irritation, improve hydration, prevent fungal growth on the scalp and keep your hair nourished .Its moisturizing effects help to treat dry scalp while its antimicrobial properties help to decrease the amount of organisms on your scalp and other hair related issues. The triglycerides in coconut oil can penetrate the hair shaft strengthening your hair and preventing protein loss .Heat up 2 teaspoons of coconut oil and apply to your scalp, massage your hair for 20minutes and wash off with shampoo.
3. Baking Soda
Baking soda is a natural disinfectant and a good cleanser for your hair and scalp. It is known to clean, soften hair, remove excess oil on the scalp, itching, irritation and dead skin cells. It has antifungal properties that fights fungal infection, calm your scalp which may help it produce less oil by washing off that extra grease that contributes to dandruff while balancing the PH of the scalp. Wet your hair; add 2 teaspoons of baking soda to a cup of lukewarm water and massage. Rinse your hair without shampooing. Do this twice a week to achieve results.
4. Aloe Vera
Aloe Vera Gel contains amino acids, healing properties and antioxidants that can be used to treat skin conditions, reduce dandruff flakes, controls fungal infection that cause hair loss and prevent skin cell damage and moisturize dry scalp while reducing irritation. The gel in aloe Vera has a cooling effect which helps to soothe inflammation, relieve pain and prevent further scaling. Massage the gel on your scalp and leave for 30minutes, use a mild shampoo to rinse the gel off from your scalp.
5. Use Mild Products
There are so many anti-dandruff shampoo in the market, try the ones that are mild because harmful chemical can cause dandruff. Moreover, do not use your shampoo in excess but at least two times a week to keep a clean scalp and control excess oil. Avoid heavily oiled hair products and maintain a proper hair and skin care hygiene. It is important to use a good quality conditioner to retain your hair moisture.
6. Garlic
Garlic is known for its antifungal properties that eliminate dangerous microbes that can cause dandruff. It provides nourishment to your scalp and clears hair infection. It reduces inflammation due to its anti-inflammatory properties, boost your immunity against fungal infection and reduce the risk of reoccurrence dandruff. It is rich in antioxidants which removes toxins buildup from the scalp and also, toxins in the body. Add 1 teaspoon of powdered garlic to 1 teaspoon of honey, mix together and apply the paste on your scalp. Let it sit for 15minutes then wash your hair with shampoo. You can also consume garlic cloves daily for best results.
7. Lemon juice
The acidic nature of lemon helps to balance the PH of your hair and these acids helps to break down fungus that can cause dandruff. Lemons are rich source of vitamin c which are essential for hair and skin health, strengthens hair follicles and cleanses the scalp. The antioxidant in lemon helps to repair damaged hair and improve scalp condition and promote collagen production. Squeeze a lemon into one cup of water, massage the mixture on your scalp, leave for a minute and wash hair with shampoo.
8. Allow Your Hair To Breathe
Give your hair a chance to breathe, not after taking out a protective style immediately u put on another one or always covering your hair even at bedtime. Air is very essential to hair; therefore you should also wear your natural hair out to refresh it. When you don’t let air touch the roots of your hair, it can cause accumulation of natural oils on your scalp and leads to dandruff and so many other hair issues such as itching and offensive odor.
9. Omega -3
People with omega-3 deficiency are prone to dandruff, dry hair, dry skin and brittle nails. Omega-3 helps in managing oil production, improve hydration, relieve irritation and regulate inflammation. It provides essential proteins and nutrients to hair follicles and prevents hair loss. It can also trigger hair growth, nourish hair follicles and promote the strength of your hair. You can take foods rich in omega-3 like salmon and walnuts or you can go for its supplements.
