How To Treat Cough At Home

Cough is a common ailment facing many people in different parts of the world. So, in this article I will be sharing with you various ways to get rid of cough at home. Cough occurs when the air passages get irritated, the air in the lungs is forced out under high pressure. Cough can be acute or chronic and can have causes that are not due to underlying disease.

1. Ginger

Ginger is a natural decongestant and can be used to dry out mucus, ginger contain  lots of medicinal properties that can be beneficial against respiratory viruses. With its antiviral, antibacterial, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds, it fights against strep throat, stop the reproduction of viruses,  effective against fever, cough, pains, cold and flu, clear toxins or buildup from the respiratory tract and suppresses allergic reactions  due to its antihistamine agent.

2. Honey

Honey   is medicinal   and   effective cough suppressant. Its sticky, thick and moist texture forms a barrier to soothe and   protect   your throat. It helps to kill off infection and promote wound healing while easing cough and sore throats.  Consume one teaspoon of honey every 3 to 4 hours, also you can mix one teaspoon of honey in one cup of warm water and drink. These  does  not only help with cough and cold but also, help you to sleep well.

3. Peppermint

Peppermint are known for its healing properties and the menthol in peppermint acts as a decongestant , helping to break down and get rid of any  mucus and soothe the throat. Regular consumption of peppermint tea  or by inhaling peppermint  vapours from a steam bath  relaxes the bronchial muscles and ease breathing in people with cough by breaking up the phlegm that may cause cough and  creates a cooling sensation that numbs scratchy throat.

4. Thyme

Thyme helps to relax the muscles in your throat that causes coughing and decreases mucus associated with allergies  and  airway infections. It  loosens  up any mucus in the throat and makes it easier to cough out and also lessen inflammation. The healing properties of thyme include antimicrobial, antitussive, antifungal, antispasmodic and antibacterial.  Steep two teaspoons of thyme leaf in some boiling water for 10 minutes and add some lemon.

5. Marshmallow Root

The roots and leaves of this herbs have been used since ancient times to treat cough, these herbs contains mucilage which helps to coat, soothe, calms  throat.  Marshmallow root can offer quick relief for symptoms related to respiratory conditions through its rich expectorant properties and provide positive benefits for immune system by boosting immunity, thereby helping to defend against disease.

6. Pineapple

Pineapples contain an enzyme called bromelain which is anti inflammatory and [mucolytic]properties which  makes your body break up mucus and  get rid of it faster, fights off diseases and kills bacteria.   It  can help with  people that has asthma and respiratory problems ,pineapple juice is known as a lytic agent  which helps to thin out mucus, making it easier to move with cough. According to research, raw pineapple juice decreases mucus faster than over the counter cough syrups.  To use these method, add a pinch of salt and a pinch of cayenne pepper in one cup of pineapple juice and drink .

7. Vitamin C

Vitamin c is known to fight  bacteria, boost immunity and metabolism. Vitamin c works to effectively fight against phlegm, sore throat and cold, prevent viral infections. Vitamin c is an important vitamin and antioxidant  that the body uses to keep you healthy and strong.  These vitamin can be found in fruits and vegetables , also in the form of supplements. Take  500mg of vitamin c 3 to 4 times a day to make sure your body  is able to fight away the cough or go for vitamin c fruits such as citrus.

8. Amla

Amla  has anti viral properties that improves the immune response of the body, it is effective in curing cough, cold and flu,  sore throat  by building up resistance against  respiratory track diseases. Amla stimulates the defense mechanisms  in the body because of its antifungal  properties that is able to fight fungal infections and bacteria , it can alleviate chronic cough, asthma, tuberculosis and blocked chest. To cure cold and cough, consume amla juice everyday, you can add in any sweetener of your choice for  better taste.
