How To Treat Cough Naturally

Common problem that people mostly face is cough, everyone cough to clear their throat but also, there are factors  that can cause more frequent coughing which are   dust, pollution, smoking, perfumes, respiratory tract infection, pneumonia, bronchitis, etc. Here are natural tips to treat cough at home.

1. Ginger

It has antibacterial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that fight against infections, boost immunity, relieve discomfort, nausea and pain. Ginger tea helps to soothe an irritated throat and relaxes airway muscles which can reduce cough. Add fresh slices of ginger or powdered ginger to a cup of hot water, allow to steep for few minutes before drinking.

2. Thyme

Thyme is an expectorant and also antispasmodic. Its leaves contain flavonoids that lessen inflammation and relax throat muscles. Thyme tea   helps to loosen phlegm and eliminate mucus from your chest.  It is one of the most commonly recommended herbs to treat dry and whooping cough. To make this tea, begin by boiling water with thyme for 30minutes, then transfer this tea in a cup and drink.

3. Honey

Honey is an effective cough suppressant. It is known to relieve cough and reduce mucus secretion. Honey does not only get rid of cough but also makes you sleep better. It is the best home remedy to get rid of cough. Honey is more effective than OTC medications that contain dextromethorphan.  Mix 2 teaspoons of honey and warm water and drink this mixture before bedtime or you could take honey in a spoon.

4. Vitamin C

Vitamin C helps to boost immune system and acts as an antioxidant, thereby reducing cough and cold. Daily intake of vitamin c helps to improve lungs function and kills any infection in your body. You can take vitamin c supplements or foods rich in vitamin c such as oranges, strawberries, kiwi, etc.

5. Stay Hydrated

Hydration helps your body to function better. Take more fluid, warm water or herbal tea when you have cough or cold to help you heal faster. Many people who have cough tend to get dehydrated. Sip warm water throughout the day to relieve nasal cavity and congestion in your chest.

6. Probiotics

Probiotics helps to balance bacteria that live in your intestines, thus, support immune system function. Probiotics are live bacteria and yeast that live in our body naturally. Probiotics are of two types, the good and bad bacteria. The good bacteria are the weapon to fight upper respiratory infections such as cough, cold and flu, sore throat, runny nose, etc. Take probiotics food like yoghurt, sauerkraut, cheese, pickles etc or probiotics supplements first thing in the morning on an empty stomach or before bedtime at night.

8. Marshmallow Root

Marshmallow root has an antibacterial properties, it helps to reduce the irritation caused by cough. It is high in mucilaginous content which is effective in getting rid of cough and cold, respiratory tract diseases and bronchitis, etc. Marshmallow root helps to build a protective coat in your throat that stops swelling and irritation and lining of your digestive tract.

9. Black Pepper

Black pepper has heating quality that helps to clear congestion, stimulates circulation and mucus flow. A chemical compound found in black pepper known as piperine helps to reduce inflammation, fight bacteria infection, relieve chest congestion and improve breathing. You can take a glass of hot water and half a teaspoon of black pepper powder, stir well and sip it.
