Members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in Israel are currently protesting at the Israeli seat of power in Jerusalem to demand the unconditional release of their detained leader in Nigeria, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. The protest, which commenced from All Saints Anglican Church, Tel Aviv, started about some hours to the time of filing this report.
Videos shared by IPOB Rapture Media on Facebook and YouTube showed members of the group walking peacefully towards the seat of power. The protesters were seen armed with both the Biafran and Israeli flags soliciting the support of the Israeli government in achieving the self-determination of the Eastern region.
They were heard chanting, “Free Nnamdi Kanu now!”, “Give us Biafra!”, “No more Nigeria!”, “Israel government help us speak out” as they carried placards with inscriptions such as “Biafran Referendum now”, “IPOB, ESN is a peaceful movement”.
They also bore placards containing pictures of young children who were victims of the Nigerian-Biafran war which ravaged the country years ago. Some sections of the protesters were also screaming, “Give us Ambazonia”.
Ambazonia is the name given to the South Eastern region of Cameroon. A man who was supposedly an Israeli government official was seen approaching the protesters to understand their mission. One of the protesters explained that they had come to protest against the incarceration of their leader in the Department of State Services (DSS) custody in Nigeria.
He stated that the Nigerian government and its security agents had killed too many Biafrans over nothing while calling for an end to the insecurity in the region. A female protester further explained that Nnamdi Kanu had simply called for an end to insecurity in the South-East but he was arrested and had been detained since June 2021 adding that the government and its officials wanted to kill the IPOB leader.
Nnamdi Kanu was brought to Nigeria from Kenya with the collaborative efforts of the Kenyan authorities and the Nigerian government in controversial circumstances in June 2021. He is facing allegations of treason leveled against him by President Muhammadu Buhari’s government. He has appeared a couple of times before Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja.
His next court case is slated for January 18, 2022 even as his two prominent legal representatives, Barr Ifeanyi Ejiofor and Barr Aloy Ejimakor have protested his continued detention at the facility of the Department of State Services (DSS) which has denied him his fundamental human rights.
However, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has announced that the Head of Directorate of State, Chika Edoziem, will address members via Radio Biafra by 7pm on Saturday, January 1, 2022.
According to a statement issued by its spokesperson, Emma Powerful, which was made available to our correspondent on Monday, Chika Edoziem will speak on important matters to chart the struggle for the sovereign Biafra nation.
This is just as the leader of IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, remains in the custody of the Department of State Service (DSS) amid several protests by the group and calls by Nigerians and interest groups for his release.
Emma Powerful also disclosed that the programme would go live on Facebook and other platforms. The statement read; “We the global family and movement of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) wish to announce to the people of Biafra both home and in the diaspora, friends of Biafra and lovers of freedom that the Head of Directorate of State of IPOB, Chika Edoziem, will address Biafrans on radio Biafra on Saturday 1st of January 2022.
“He will highlight the achievements IPOB has recorded this year, and hint on the roadmaps to our liberation. He will also address some pertinent issues pertaining to our struggle for independence.
“IPOB has gone beyond human destruction and it will remain so till Biafra freedom is fully achieved. Anybody can say whatever they like, IPOB remains unshakable. There is no retreat until Biafra sovereignty is fully restored.
“The broadcast will be simultaneously relayed live through our many channels including IPOB community radio, tuning, radio Biafra FM, Facebook, satellite and others.
“We, therefore, urge everybody to hook on and listen in during the broadcast. We also wish to inform Biafrans that Mazi Chinasa Nworu, and his crew will also be on radio Biafra for questions and answer on 30th of December 2021. Call in during the live programme for your questions on anything bordering on our independence struggle,” he stated.
