Ma Yun popularly known as Jack Ma is a famous Chinese business leader, business philosopher, motivational speaker, financial counselor, entrepreneur, investor, author, writer and a philanthropist. He is the current richest man in China and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of “Alibaba Group” a popular ecommerce online store. He was born on 15th March 1964 in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China. He is currently 54 years old.
He began studying English at a young age by conversing with English-speakers at Hangzhou international hotel in China. He would ride 70 miles on his bicycle to give tourists tours of the area to practice his English for nine years. He became pen pals with one of those foreigners, who nicknamed him “Jack” because he found it very hard to pronounce his Chinese name. As of March 2018, Jack Ma net worth rose to $42.4 billion, making him the richest man in China as well as one of the wealthiest people in the world. Jack Ma is the co-founder and chief executive chairman of Alibaba Group, a multinational technology conglomerate. 
Jack Ma is seen as a global ambassador for Chinese business and as such is frequently listed as one of the world’s most powerful people by Forbes. In 2017, he was ranked 2nd in the annual “World’s 50 Greatest Leaders” list by Fortune. Later in his youth, Jack Ma struggle to attend college. The Chinese entrance exams are held only once a year and it took him four years to pass the exam.

After graduating from High School, Jack Ma attended Hangzhou Teacher’s Institute, currently known as Hangzhou Normal University in China and graduated in 1988 with a Bachelor’s Degree in English. While at school, Jack Ma was the head of the student union council. After his graduation from the university, Jack Ma became a lecturer of English and International Trade at Hangzhou Dianzi University in China. He later enrolled at Beijing-based Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business and graduated in 2006.
Jack Ma applied for 30 different jobs and got rejected by all. He went for a job with the police and they said he is not good for the job, he went to KFC when they came to his city in China and they rejected him, twenty-four people went for the job and Twenty-three were accepted, he was the only guy rejected. In addition, he applied 10 times for Harvard Business School in United States of America for the position of a lecturer and was rejected.
In 1994, Jack Ma heard about the Internet. In early 1995, he went to the United State of America and with the help of his friends he was introduced to the Internet. During his first encounter he searched the word “beer”. Although he found information related to beer from many countries, he was surprised to find none from China.
He also tried to search for general information about China and again was surprised to find none. So he and his friend created an “ugly” website related to China. He launched the website at 9:40 AM, and by 12:30 PM he had received emails from some Chinese wishing to know about him. This is when Jack Ma realized that the Internet had something great to offer.
In April 1995, Jack Ma, his wife and a friend raised $20,000 and started their first company. Their company was dedicated to creating websites for companies. He named their company “China Yellow Pages”. Within three years, his company had made 5,000,000 Chinese Yuan which was equivalent to $800,000. Jack Ma began building websites for Chinese companies with the help of his friends in the United States. At a conference in 2010, Jack Ma revealed that he has never actually written a line of code nor made one sale to a customer. He acquired a computer for the first time at the age of 33.

From 1998 to 1999, Jack Ma headed an information technology company established by the China International Electronic Commerce Center, a department of the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation. In 1999, Jack Ma quit the job and returned to Hangzhou in China with his team and established Alibaba, a leading Chinese Ecommerce store. In October 1999 and January 2000, Alibaba won a total of a $25 million foreign venture capital investment twice.
In September 2014, it was reported that Alibaba was raising over $25 billion in an initial public offering (IPO) on the New York Stock Exchange. Alibaba became one of the most valuable technology companies in the world after raising $25 billion, the largest initial public offering in US financial history. Jack Ma now serves as the executive chairman of Alibaba Group.
In 2017, Jack Ma entered the acting industry with his first kung fu short film “Gong Shou Dao”. It was filmed in collaboration with the Double 11 Shopping Carnival “Singles Day”. In the same year, he has also participated in singing festival, as well as performing dances during Alibaba’s 18th anniversary party.
Jack Ma is currently married to Cathy Zhang and the marriage is blessed with two lovely children comprising of a boy and a girl namely “Ma Yuanbao” and “Ma Yuankun”. Jack Ma met his wife, Zhang Ying, when they were studying at Hangzhou Normal University in China. They got married shortly after graduating from the university in the late 1980s. Both of them began working as teachers in the late 1980s.
In 2004, China Central Television and its viewers selected Jack Ma as one of the “Top 10 Business Leaders of the Year”. In September 2005, World Economic Forum selected Jack Ma as a “Young Global Leader”. Fortune Magazine also selected him as one of the “25 Most Powerful Businessperson in Asia”. Businessweek also selected him as a “Businessperson of the Year” in 2007. Barron’s also selected him as one of the 30 “World’s Best CEOs” in 2008.

In 2014, Jack Ma was ranked as the 30th most powerful person in the world in an annual ranking published by Forbes. In 2015, Asian Award honored him with the Entrepreneur of the Year Award. In 2017, Fortune ranked him second on its World’s 50 Greatest Leaders list. In 2017, a KPMG survey ranked Jack Ma 3rd in global tech innovation visionary survey. In October 2017, Jack Ma was given an honorary doctorate degree of Doctor of Science in Technopreneurship from De La Salle University in Manila, Philippines.
Jack Ma is currently the richest and most influential man in China with an estimated net worth of $42.4 billion.
