Lawrence Joseph Ellison popularly known as Larry Ellison is a famous American businessman, entrepreneur, investor and a philanthropist, who currently serves as the chief technology officer, chairman, co-founder and chief executive officer of Oracle Corporation, one of the leading technology companies in the United States of America.
He was born on 17th August 1944 in New York City, New York in the United States of America to an unwed Jewish mother. He is currently 73 years old. His biological father was an Italian American United States Army Air Corps pilot. Larry Ellison contracted pneumonia at the age of 9 months old, his mother decided to give him to her aunt and uncle for adoption. He did not meet his biological mother again until he was 48 years old.
Larry Ellison remembers his adoptive mother as warm and loving, in contrast to his austere, unsupportive, and often distant adoptive father, who adopted the name Ellison to honor his point of entry into the United States, Ellis Island. His adopted father, Louis Ellison was a government employee who had made a small fortune in Chicago real estate, only to lose it during the Great Depression.
Although Larry Ellison was raised in a Reformed Jewish home by his adoptive parents, who attended synagogue regularly, he remained a religious skeptic. Ellison during an interview states; “While I think I am religious in one sense, the particular dogmas of Judaism are not dogmas I subscribe to.
I don’t believe that they are real. They are interesting stories. They are interesting mythology, and I certainly respect people who believe these are literally true, but I don’t. I see no evidence for this stuff”. At the age of 13 years old Larry Ellison refused to have a bar mitzvah celebration. He further stated that his love affair with Israel is not connected to religious sentiments, but rather due to the innovative spirit of Israelis in the technology sector.
Larry Ellison left the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign after his second year and couldn’t take his final exams, because his adoptive mother had just died. After spending a summer in Northern California, Larry Ellison attended the University of Chicago for one term, where he first encountered computer design. In 1966, at the age of 22 years old, Larry Ellison moved to Northern California in the United States of America.
As of January 2018, Larry Ellison was listed by Forbes magazine as the fifth wealthiest person in the United States and also as the eighth wealthiest person in the world with an estimated net worth of $62.4 billion. Larry Ellison studied at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and University of Chicago without graduating before moving to California in 1996. While working at Ampex in the early 1970s, Larry Ellison became influenced by Edgar F. Zcodd’s research on relational database design, which in 1977 led to the formation of what became Oracle.
Oracle became a successful database vendor to mid- and low-range systems, competing with Sybase and Microsoft SQL Server, which led to Larry Ellison being listed by Forbes magazine as one of the richest men in the world. Larry Ellison has donated up to 1% of his wealth to charity and has signed “The Giving Pledge”. In addition to his work at Oracle, Larry Ellison has had success in yachting, through Oracle Team in USA. He is a licensed aircraft pilot who owns two military jets.
Larry Ellison has been married and divorced four times to four different women. In 1967, he got married to Adda Quinn and divorced her in1974. In 1977, he got married to Nancy Wheeler Jenkins and divorced her in 1978. Larry Ellison and Nancy Wheeler Jenkins were married for six months before Larry Ellison founded Software Development Laboratories. Unfortunately, in 1978, he divorced Nancy Wheeler Jenkins. Wheeler Jenkins however, decided to give up any claim on her husband’s company for $500.
In 1983, he married Barbara Boothe and divorced her in 1986. Barbara Boothe was a former receptionist at Relational Software Inc. (RSI). He had two children with Barbara Boothe namely David and Megan, who are currently Hollywood film producers at Skydance Productions and Annapurna Pictures respectively. In 2003, he got married to Melanie Craft, a romance novelist and divorced her in 2010. They married on 18th December 2003 at his Woodside estate in the United States of America.
Larry Ellison late friend, Steve Jobs, who was the former CEO and co-founder of Apple Inc. was the official wedding photographer, and Representative of Tom Lantos Officiated. Unfortunately, Larry Ellison divorced his fourth wife Melanie Craft in 2010. In 2010, Larry Ellison made a brief cameo appearance in the 2010 movie “Iron Man 2”. Also in 2010, Larry Ellison purchased a 50% share of the BNP Parbas Open tennis tournament. Larry Ellison owns many exotic cars, including an Audi R8 and a McLaren F1.
His favorite car is the Acura NSX, which he was known to give as gifts each year during its production. Larry Ellison is also reportedly to be the owner of a Lexus LFA and a Lexus LS600hL. Larry Ellison currently resides in Woodside, California in the United States of America with his family.
Larry Ellison is currently the eighth richest and most influential man in the world with an estimated net worth of $62.4 billion.
