Nigerian Court Sentence A Chinese Man To 2 Years In Prison For Damaging N1000 Note

A Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos State has sentenced a Chinese man to two years imprisonment for damaging a One Thousand Naira note at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos earlier this month. The Chinese man who goes by the name Lei has been sentenced to prison for abusing the Nigerian currency.

According to BBC Pidgin on Tuesday evening, the Chinese man who is identified as Li Lei Lei damaged a One Thousand Naira note at the airport on 17 May this year, and he was arrested and taken to the Court by the EFCC for violating the Central Bank of Nigeria Establishment. And after finding him guilty, Justice Nicholas Oweibo sentenced him to two years imprisonment.

“However, this should serve as a big warning to every Nigerian citizen who might have been abusing the Nigerian currency. Given It’s only the Central Bank that is permitted by law to destroy or burn currency notes in Nigeria, any citizen is likely to be punished for the act if found guilty,” The Judge stated before lashing out the sentence on the Chinese convict.
