Nkem Owoh popularly known as Osuofia is a legendary Nollywood comic actor, producer, singer, comedian, and a television personality. He is very gifted and talented. He acts mostly in comedy movie and always the role of a wicked man in several Nollywood movies. He is married with grownup children.
He was born on 17th October 1960 in Amagu Village in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State in the south eastern part of Nigeria. He is currently 59 years old. He is considered as Nigerian most talented comic actor. He always plays the role of a title chief, elder, father, father in-law and step father in several Nollywood movies.
Nkem Owoh completed both his primary and secondary school education in Nsukka, Enugu State in the south eastern part of Nigeria and obtained both his First School Leaving Certificate and West African Senior School Certificate. While still in secondary school, he was actively involved in drama club, theatre club and performing art. He has featured in several stage plays and drama while still in secondary school.
Nkem Owoh after completing both his primary and secondary school education proceeded to the University of Ilorin to study Electrical and Electronic Engineering. He later completed his studies at the Institute of Management Technology (IMT) in Enugu where he graduated with a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. During his university studies, Nkem Owoh began acting in various televisions drama and film productions.
In 1995, Nkem Owoh joined the Nigerian movie industry popularly known as Nollywood and rose to fame after starring in the Nollywood Igbo indigenous comedy movie “Onye-Eze” where he played the role of Osuofia. The movie earned him so many nominations and gave him an advantage in the Nigerian movie industry popularly known as Nollywood.
In 2003, Nkem Owoh became a global figure after starring in the Nollywood blockbuster movie “Osuofia in London” the movie won him so many awards both home and abroad. The movie won him the award for Best Comic Actor in Nigeria at the Africa Movie Academy Awards, Best Actor in Indigenous Movie at the Nigeria Entertainment Awards and Best Actor in a Comedy at the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards.
Nkem Owoh currently has an estimated net worth of over $3.9 million, making him one of the richest and most influential actors in Nigeria. In 2011, Nkem Owoh was honored as Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) which happens to be the highest award and honor given to a celebrity who has contributed immensely to the economic growth and development of the country through entertainment. Nkem Owoh has been regarded as one of the best comic actors in Nigeria and also one of the highest paid actors in Nigeria.
Nkem Owoh is currently married to Ngozi Nkem Owoh and the marriage is blessed with many lovely children. In 2005, the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) and Association of Movie Producers (AMP) placed Nkem Owoh and some top Nollywood stars on a one year suspension from filming due to their demand of huge fees. In 2007, Nkem Owoh was arrested in Amsterdam, Netherlands on suspicion of lottery fraud and immigration violations and was later released.
Aside from acting, Nkem Owoh is also a musician. In 2007, he released an album titled “I Go Chop Your Dollar”. The theme of the song is about advance fee fraud which was derived from the movie he featured in, titled “The Master”. Few weeks later the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC) banned the song permanently from airing in Nigeria stating that the song is promoting bad image for Nigeria.
In 2008, Nkem Owoh won the Best Actor in a Leading Role at the Africa Movie Academy Awards. In November 2009, Nkem Owoh was kidnapped in the eastern part of Nigeria, Enugu precisely and the kidnappers demanded a huge ransom of N15 million for his release. Nkem Owoh was later released after his family members allegedly paid a ransom fee of N1.4 million to the kidnappers. Nkem Owoh has acted in more than 250 Nollywood movies. Some of the movies he has acted include Ukwa, Onye-Eze, Fake Doctor, Police Officer, Lion Heart and many more. Nkem Owoh is indeed an interesting character to watch out for in the Nigerian movie industry popularly known as Nollywood.
