On Sunday 11th April 2021, the governors of Enugu state, Abia state, Ebonyi state, Anambra state and Imo state set up a joint security outfit for the South-East with the codename, Ebubeagu. The decision was taken during the crucial meeting held in Imo state which had the attendance of Navy and Air force commanders, the inspector-general of police, Ohaneze Ndigbo and other stakeholders.
The security outfit would be on the same page with the country’s security apparatus. However, their activities would be mainly in the Southeastern region. The set up is coming weeks after the region faced unprecedented attacks which saw the destruction of police offices and unlawful release of 1884 inmates from the correctional facility in Imo state.
It is understandable that the people of South-East have been put into anxiety following the persistent security threats in the country. Henceforward, this recent move by the Southeastern governors would go a long way in restoring tranquility in the region once again.
