Obafemi Akinwunmi Martins popularly known as Obafemi Martins is a famous Nigerian international and professional football player, investor, entrepreneur and a philanthropist. He has been described as one of the best goal scorers in the game of football and the greatest and most skillful football player of all time and also one of the most successful footballers in Africa.
He was born on 28th October 1984 in Lagos State in the south western part of Nigeria. He is currently 33 years old. He was a former striker for the Nigerian national team, Super Eagles and English Premier League club New Castle United and Spanish League cub Inter Milan.
Obafemi Martins currently plays as a forward striker for Shanghai Greenland Shenhua. He is popularly known for his speed on the ball and his ability to score amazing goals. After leaving Nigeria for Italy at the age of 16 years old, he has since then played for several top-division clubs around Europe.
In 2002, he began his senior career at the Italian Serie A club Inter Milan, before moving to the English Premier League club Newcastle United in 2006. After which he later moved to German Bundesliga club VFL Wolfsburg in 2009. In July 2010, Obafemi Martins joined Russian Premier League club Rubin Kazan. In January 2011, he was loaned to Birmingham City.
While in Inter Milan, Obafemi Martins has won the Italian Serie A title, the Italian Cup (twice), and the Italian Super Cup. While in Birmingham, he scored the winning goal in the 2011 Football League Cup Final. Obafemi Martins has played European football with Inter Milan, Newcastle United and Wolfsburg, winning the UEFA Cup with Newcastle United.
Obafemi Martins highest goal scoring league seasons so far was in the 2004-2005 Serie A, where he scored 11 goals and also in the 2006-2007 English Premier League, where he scored 17 goals. While playing in international football, Obafemi Martins has been in the Nigerian national team, Super Eagles squad for the Africa Cup of Nations in 2006, 2008 and 2010, and also for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
From 2013 to 2015, Obafemi Martins played for Seattle Sounders FC of Major League Soccer, scoring over 40 goals, before moving on to China.
Obafemi Martins had two brothers who are also international footballers and having played football professionally. His elder brother, Oladipup Martins, played for Reggiana, Partizan and Innsbruck before retiring from football in 2009 due to heart problems.
Unfortunatley, his elder brother, Oladipup Martins died on 8th August 2011 due to suspected heart attack in Lagos, Nigeria. Obafemi Martins also has a younger brother who goes by the name John Ronan Martins. Obafemi Martins is currently married to Ghanaian-Italian top model Abigail Barwuah, who is also the sister of Mario Balotelli. The couple currently has one child named Kendrick, who was born in 2013.
Obafemi Martins is currently one of the richest and most influential international footballer in Nigeria with an estimated net worth of $35 million.
