Omawumi Biography and Net Worth

Omawumi Megbele popularly known by her stage name as Omawumi is a famous Nigerian R&B singer, songwriter, recording artiste, stage performer, actress, model, and a philanthropist from Itsekiri ethnicity. She was born on 13th April 1982 in Warri, Delta State in the south southern part of Nigeria. She is currently 35 years old.

Her father’s name is Chief Dr. Frank Megbele while her mother’s name is Mrs. Aya Megbele. She is originally from Warri, Delta State in the south southern part of Nigeria. She started her music career in 2007. She is currently a brand ambassador for Globacom, and Malta Guinness. She is also part of the campaign called “Rise with the Energy of Africa”.

She rose to fame after emerging as the first runner-up on 2007 West African Idols, a reality TV show that is aimed at discovering new talents in Africa. Her sophomore album “The Lasso of Truth” was reported to be a commercial success in Nigeria. 

In 2014, Omawumi got married to her long time boyfriend Toyin Yussuf and the couples are blessed with beautiful kids. Omawumi is also an actress and has featured in several Nollywood movies which include House of Gold, Make a Move, Inale and Living Funeral.

Omawumi attended Nana Primary School in Warri, Delta State, Nigeria and obtained her First School Leaving Certificate. After completing her primary school education, Omawumi proceeded to College of Education Demonstration Secondary School in Warri, Delta State, Nigeria and obtained her West African Senior School Certificate.

After completing her primary and secondary school education in Warri, Delta State, Omawumi proceeded to Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma in Edo State, Nigeria and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Law. After her graduation from the university in 2005, Omawumi moved to Port Harcourt, River State in the south southern part of Nigeria, where she worked with her family’s law firm called “O.S Megbele & Associates” where she worked as a Barrister and a legal practitioner.

In a quest for more knowledge, Omawumi proceeded to Alliance Francaise Institute, where she studied French. In 2014, she got married to her long time boyfriend Toyin Yusuf and the marriage is blessed with beautiful kids.

Omawumi rose to prominence as a contestant on Idols West Africa. Omawumi, with her strong and outstanding personality, was voted the 1st runner-up of the competition when it ended in May 2007. Since then, she has had numerous performances on the stage with musicians such as P-Square, 2Face Idibia, D’Banj, Wizkid, Banky W, MI, Flavour, Phyno, Olamide, Davido, Tekno and host of other top celebrities in Nigeria and abroad.

Omawumi aside from singing is also an actress. In 2009, she played a minor role in the 2009 edition of the “V-Monolugues” a television series and play that reflects the negative issues affecting women in Nigeria. She also starred in the musical play Olurombi. In 2010, she acted as a minor character in the movie “Inale” a Hollywood/Nollywood collaboration movie produced by Bongos-Ikwe production and starring Hakeem Kae Kazeem, Dede Mabiaku and Ini Edo.

In 2011, she starred in Funke Akindele blockbuster movie “Return of Jenifa” where she plays a supporting role alongside with Funke Akindele who played the lead role. In 2013, she starred in the popular movie “House of Gold” alongside with Yvonne Nelson, Majid Michel and Ice Prince.

Omawumi has two debut studio albums to her name with several hit singles like If you ask me, When the Boss is coming, Bottom Belle, The African Way, The best you can be, I Go Go, What a Bang Bang, In The Music, Brighter Day, Niger Delta, Same Guy, Blessings Flow, etc. In 2014, she was nominated for Best Female Artiste of the Year at the ELOY Awards.

Omawumi is currently one of the richest and most influential female artiste in Nigeria with an estimated net worth of $2 million.
