Popular Biafra agitator Simon Ekpa has stated that the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) will stop the sit-at-home order in the southeast. Simon Ekpa, a Finland-based lawyer and Prime Minister of the Biafra Republic Government in Exile, disclosed this on Wednesday. According to him, the only thing that can stop the civic action of sit-at-home in the southeast region is the unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu. According to him, nothing can stop the civic disobedience in south east unless Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is released from the DSS dungeon.
He stated that Ohaneze failed to achieve significant influence on the 2023 Presidential election, which saw the emergence of Bola Ahmed Tinubu as president. He added that Ndigbo should not support leaders who cannot speak truth to power.
According to his words; “Ohaneze bragged that if Igbo didn’t get the presidential ticket from PDP or APC, Nigeria would break up and that voting Tinubu would bring war, but today, the Ohaneze are calling on Ndigbo to support Tinubu, people that act like that have lost the morality to speak for the interests of Ndigbo. Leaders who change their principles according to who they meet are not worthy of being called leaders,” he wrote.
He told President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration that only the immediate release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra will end the sit-at-home order in the southeast. Recall that sit-at-home order has been observed in the southeast since the re-arrest of Nnamdi Kanu in June 2021. Simon Ekpa stressed that the sit-at-home in the region will end with Nnamdi Kanu’s release.
He noted that self-referendum would restore the region’s lasting peace and economic stability. According to his words; “Our message to the Nigerian government is to release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu immediately, or we will add another strict measure to civil disobedience, and this time is to stop oil exploitation in Biafra soil”, he said.
“We are also officially notifying the Nigerian government of our preparation for the Self Referendum and calling on the government to support the self-referendum, which is the true democratic process to restore peace and stability in the region”, he stated.
However, Nnamdi Kanu personal lawyer Aloy Ejimakor has stated that Buhari took IPOB’s self-determination struggle personally and that Tinubu should not repeat the same mistake. He stated this in a post on his verified Twitter handle on Wednesday. The lawyer asserted that it is a demand on the Nigerian state, and not against its President.
Aloy Ejimakor explained that it was President Muhammadu Buhari who took it personally to the point that he killed and rendition for it. He, however, advised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to be smart enough not to repeat the same mistake.
According to his words; “The demand for self determination is not personal. It is a demand on the Nigerian State, not against its President. “It was Buhari that took it personal to the point that he killed and rendition for it. President Tinubu should be smart enough not to repeat the same mistake, Aloy Ejimakor stated.
Also in May this year, Aloy Ejimakor said it is only through dialogue that a self-determination movement can be contained. He also stated that repressive actions cannot overpower a self-determination agitation, citing cases of how Nigerians who fought for the nation’s independence could not be defeated by colonialists. He, however, said the country’s independence agitators prevailed through dialogue, stating that the same was applicable to the late South African legendary leader, Nelson Mandela and his compatriots who defeated apartheid.
Aloy Ejimakor, who had condemned the rendition of Nnamdi Kanu in June 2021 and his detention in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS), has also argued several times that dialogue is the antidote to the self-determination movement.
However, George Agbakahi a member of All Progressive Congress (APC) and a member of Tinubu Presidential Campaign Council has stated that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) at the appropriate time. George Agbakahi who spoke in an interview on Tuesday said that Nnamdi Kanu’s case is a global issue and that Tinubu is a compassionate leader and would be ready to release Nnamdi Kanu even if it is with some sort of conditions.
According to his words; “The issue of Nnamdi Kanu is a global issue and the President discussed this issue when he campaigned in Ebonyi State. As a member of the Presidential Campaign Council, from the South-East I was privileged to be in that campaign rally. The President said openly that he would work with Igbo leaders to deal with issues that are affecting Ndigbo, especially the issue of Nnamdi Kanu and the IPOB as well as the issue of Unknown Gunmen. I believe that the President will do that at the right time.
