It was a scary but horrific sight on Thursday when passersby and residents reportedly found eight dead bodies on the Obiaja River Bank along Uke Road in Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State. Obiaja River, popularly known as Mmiri Mgbo is situated at the boundary between Nnobi, Uke and Ideani communities and is patronized by ritualists and sand excavators from Uke, Alor, Nnobi and Ideani and other areas.
The River, which is surrounded by thick forest and cashew trees had since long time ago become the dumping ground of dead victims of kidnappers, armed robbers, rape victims, among others while the Uke – Ideani Junction in Nnobi Road had become a dreaded zone due to the nefarious activities of armed robbers and kidnappers along the place.
Eyewitnesses told Saturday Independent that the dead bodies were laid face down with their hands tied to their backs with their clothes. Police sources said some of the corpses were already decomposing as at 7:30AM on Thursday morning when security operatives arrived at the place.
The ugly but horrific discovery is said to be causing tension at Nnobi and Uke which are the two main communities that share the river. At press time, it was not known who the dead were, who the perpetrators of the killings were, where the victims were killed and whether the victims were killed elsewhere and brought to the place which had become notorious for such evil activities of the bad ones in the society.
The Police spokesman for Anambra State Police Command, Ikenga Tochukwu told Saturday Independent yesterday, that the investigation into the incident had commenced and is still ongoing.
