Honestly, they are serious war going on between Nigerian youths and President Buhari government. President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to freeze the bank account of all the celebrities that led the #EndSars protest saying they are the cause of the destruction of lives and properties in the country. Presidential aide and Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu stated that those responsible for the riots of the post-EndSARS protests will be held accountable.
He further revealed that the Presidency has concluded that those who allowed the recent #EndSARS protests to degenerate into riots and violence leading to the destruction of properties in the country and loss of lives must be made to account for their actions and that freezing their bank account is just a beginning of their punishment for encouraging anarchy in the country and their plan to overthrow the government.
On whether his principal was aware of the development, Garba Shehu stated that the government will stop at nothing to make sure that the protesters must face the law. He further stated that a lot of petition are seating on the President desk urging the President to make sure that those who fuel the protest that resulted into riot are prosecuted and serve as an example to any other group of people that will want to create anarchy in the country.
According to his words; “This country has only one President and has only one constitution. President Muhammadu Buhari is responsible for his government. The buck stops on his table. We are a country governed by law. There is a constitution under section 33 that clearly defines the rights of citizens to freely protest in a peaceful way but where a peaceful protest turns into riot, violence and looting, there is a law and order duty to be performed.
“Everyone witnessed the massive looting of public and private properties particularly in Lagos, Calabar, Plateau, Taraba and some other states, even the FCT. Now, the laws of the country must be allowed to decide, to rule on wrongdoing on the part of anybody. I am not particular about any celebrity or promoter, but this country has been harmed enormously and people should be prepared to account for what they did.”
He also added that some politicians who promoted the #EndSARS demonstrations including those of the Peoples Democratic Party should publicly denounce the attendant destruction caused by the protest. He further stated that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) had gotten a court order to freeze the accounts of 20 #EndSARS promoters which include celebrities and public figures. He further stated that they will also be arrested by the DSS to answer some questions.
This disclosure was made by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the President, Garba Shehu, while featuring on Channels TV Programme, titled Sunday Politics.
However, Governor Akeredolu of Ondo State has stated that he sees nothing wrong with the freezing of accounts of some individuals suspected to have funded the #EndSARS protests. The Governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu, stated that he sees nothing wrong with freezing the bank accounts of those that promoted the #EndSars protest and trying to encourage anarchy in the country. He disclosed this in an interview with Channels TV on Wednesday.
The Governor explained that he sees nothing wrong with this, insisting that those who feel there are innocent can explain to the courts and if the court prove them innocent then their bank account will be unfreeze.
According to his words; “Speaking very honestly, I don’t see anything wrong in it,” he said. If for instance, my account was frozen, what would I do? All I would do is go back to court to explain. Even politicians have their accounts frozen sometimes. You have to go to court and explain. And at the end of the day, the court will say, ‘Leave the account, the account should be un-frozen’ and you take your money back.”
He added that the CBN freezes account it may suspect of wrongdoings and freezing the accounts does not mean they were used for wrongdoings.
According to his words; “If your account is frozen, you justify why the money was there. You come to explain to what use you have put this money. It is just that CBN suspected this account, then the owner of the account will explain. It is not a conclusion that those accounts were used for acts of treason. “If it is that ‘Okay, we used this money to pay this caterer to give food to these boys when they were there. We spent money before the hoodlums took over,’ it will be explained, people will know and the accounts will be de-frozen,” Akeredolu stated.
It was reported last week that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) received an order from the Presidency and the federal high court in Abuja to freeze the accounts of 20 individuals and public figures linked to the #EndSARS protests.
The Central Bank of Nigeria disclosed this week that in order to freeze the accounts of the 20 #EndSARS promoters, they were granted approval by a Federal High Court in Abuja, arguing that the funds in their accounts might have been linked to terrorist activities who are pretending to be #EndSars protester.
