Sarkodie Biography and Net Worth

Michael Owusu Addo popularly known by his stage name as Sarkodie is a famous Ghanaian hip hop rapper, songwriter, recording artist, stage performer, entrepreneur and a philanthropist. He is popularly regarded as the fastest rapper in Africa. He was born on 10th July 1988 in Tema, Ghana in the western part of Africa.

He is currently 29 years old. He is very gifted and talented. Sarkodie is the fourth child in a family of five children. His mother’s name is Maame Aggrey. Sarkodie started rapping at a very young age and continued rapping throughout his educational career. Sarkodie completed his primary school education in Tema, Ghana and obtained his First School Leaving Certificate.

After completing his primary school education, Sarkodie proceeded to Tema Methodist Senior High School in Tema, Ghana and obtained his West African Senior School Certificate. After completing his secondary school education, Sarkodie earned a degree in Graphic Design from IPMC.

Sarkodie began his musical career professionally in 2007 as an underground rapper. He appeared on Adom FM’s popular rap competition “Kasahare Level”. It was through this rap battles that he met his former manager Duncan Williams of Duncwills Entertainment.

He also met musicians like Edems and Castro who introduced him to Hammer, who is an established record producer and also the CEO of Three Last Two Entertainment. Hammer decided to feature Sarkodie on his two songs and later featured him in his Volta Regime album after being impressed with his rap flows.

After this exposure, Sarkodie recorded his first debut studio album “Makye” with the release of his first hit single “Baby” featuring Mugeez of the duo R2Bees. The song became an instant hit and made Sarkodie a household name within the Ghanaian music industry. Sarkodie is currently signed to Duncwills Entertainment and Sarkcess Music Label. His genre of music is hip hop.

He is currently the fastest rapper in Africa. Sarkodie has won the Best International Act at the BET Awards. He currently has a son by the name Adalyn Owusu Addo. In 2012, Sarkodie won the Best International Act (African category) at the 2012 BET Awards.

In 2014, he was nominated in the same category at the 2014 BET Awards. In 2015, Sarkodie was ranked the 19th most Influential Ghanaian by e.tv Ghana. He is considered as one of the major proponents of the Azonto genre and dance. Sarkodie is often named as one of Africa’s greatest hip hop artists and the fastest rapper in Africa.

In 2014, MTV Base ranked him 6th on its list of the Hottest African MC’s in 2014. In 2013, Lynx TV ranked him 1st on its list of the “Top 10 Ghanaian Rappers of All Time”. In 2015, The Guardian listed him as one of its top five hip hop acts on the African continent. In 2015, AfricaRanking.com ranked him 3rd on its list of the “Top 10 African Rappers of 2015.

Sarkodie often raps in his native language Twi and is considered as a multifaceted rapper due to the various musical styles he possess. He was ranked 8th on Forbes and Channel O’s 2013 and 2015 lists of the Top 10 Richest and Bankable Artistes in Africa.

Sarkodie has had the privilege of performing on the same stage with international musicians such as T-Pain, Miguel, Movado, Trey Songz and Ludacris. He has a large fan base in Africa, and is considered one of the most celebrated musical icons to emerge from Ghana.

On 13th July 2013, Sarkodie launched “The Sarkodie Foundation” which is tasked with the mission of supporting under-privileged children. He made generous donations to the Royal Seed Home Orphanage in Kasoa, Ghana. Sarkodie has presented to the orphanage items worth thousands of Ghana cedis. On 25th December 2014, The Sarkodie Foundation embarked on a feed-da-kids campaign in Tema, Ghana, where they provided thousands of kids with eight sacks of rice, yogurt and beverage cans. They also gave away school bags, water bottles, hats and other items to the orphanage.

Sarkodie is the owner of “Sark by Yas” clothing line, which was launched on 27th April 2013. The clothing line has accessories for men, women and children. In 2012, he was officially unveiled as the Brand Ambassador for Samsung Electronics at the University of Ghana, Legon. As part of the event, Samsung unveiled the Samsung Galaxy Pocket and Chief Hero Phones that had customized wallpapers of Sarkodie and his signature.

With that development, users had the opportunity to download exclusive tracks of Sarkodie songs. Sarkodie also launched the Obidi Chief headphones. In 2013, Sarkodie signed an endorsement contract deal with Fan Milk in Ghana. Sarkodie is currently in partnership with Tigo Telecommunications in Ghana, a brand that sponsored the 2013 Rapperholic tour.

In 2012, Sarkodie became the first Ghanaian artist to win the Best International Act (African Category) at the 2012 BET Awards. In 2014 and 2015, he was also nominated for Best International Act (African Category) at the BET Awards.

His second debut studio album “Rapperholic” was the recipient of 3 Ghana Music Awards from 12 nominations. In 2018, Sarkodie won the award for Best Collaboration at the Sound City MVP Awards.

Sarkodie has also emerged the winner in the Best Collaboration category for his song “Pain Killer” with Runtown at Sound City MVP Awards held at Eko Hotels and Suites in Victoria Island, Lagos, Nigeria.

In 2009, Sarkodie released his first studio album “Makye”. In 2012, Sarkodie released his second studio album “Rapperholic”. In 2013, Sarkodie released his third studio album “T.M.G”. In 2014, Sarkodie released his fourth studio album “Sakology”. In 2015, Sarkodie released his fifth studio album “Mary”. In 2017, Sarkodie released his sixth studio album “Highest”.

Sarkodie is currently one of the richest and most influential artiste in Ghana with an estimated net worth of $10 million.
