Enitimi Alfred Odom popularly known by his stage name as Timaya is a famous Nigerian singer, songwriter, stage performer and a recording artiste. He is popularly known as Egberi Papa 1 of Bayelsa and Dem mama soldier. He was born on 15th August 1980 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State in the south southern part of Nigeria. He is currently 37 years old.
He is very gifted and talented. Timaya is originally from Odi, A small village in Bayelsa State in the south southern part of Nigeria, but was born and bred in Port Harcourt, Rivers State in the south southern part of Nigeria, where he completed both his primary and secondary school education and obtained both his First School Leaving Certificate and West African Senior School Certificate.
Timaya started his music career in 2005 and is currently signed to Dem Mama Records. He is currently the founder and Chief Executive Officer of the south-south hip hop group records label “Dem Mama Soldiers”. Timaya rose to fame after the release of his hit single “Dem Mama” which also appeared on his first debut studio album. In 2006, Timaya became a public figure after the release of his hit single “True Story”.
In 2007, Timaya released his first debut studio album “True Story”. His second debut studio album “Gift and Grace” was released in 2008. Timaya gained further visibility, international prominence and public recognitions through his third debut studio album “De Rebirth” which was released in partnership with Black Body Entertainment and its lead single “Plantain Boy” ranked top at the MTV music charts. Timaya’s third debut studio album received positive reviews and was commercially successful.
He collaborated with Dem Mama Soldiers on the released of his fourth debut studio album “Long Life N Prosperity”. In 2012, Timaya released his fifth debut studio album “Upgrade” which spawned hits singles like “Bum Bum”, “Sexy Ladies”, and “Malonogede”. Till date, his work has earned him four Headies Awards, one Nigeria Music Video Awards and several Nigeria Entertainment Awards.
Timaya grew up in a large family. He is the youngest child in a family of 15 children born in Agip Estate, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria. His father was a banker and his mother was a trader. For his early education, Timaya attended Assemblies of God Nursery and Primary School in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria. His secondary school education began at Nkpolu Oroworukwo Secondary School in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria.
Timaya during his teenager years, often break house rules to attend late-night music events. Before Timaya could graduate from school, his mother arranged for him to travel with his older brother and older sister to Lagos. After moving to the city, he gained admission into Ikeja Grammar School in Lagos State, Nigeria, where he eventually obtained his West African Senior School Certificate.
Timaya later returned to Port Harcourt to study Banking and Finance at the University of Port Harcourt in Rivers State, Nigeria. However, he performed poorly in examinations and dropped out after his first semester in University of Port Harcourt. He then moved back to Lagos to join Eadris Abdulkareem’s hip-hop group as a backup vocalist.
After three years working for Eedris Abdulkareem, Timaya departed from the group to focus on his solo career. He began to record collaborations with fellow up-and-coming artists and made his first cameo appearance in an unreleased music video by UDX, a Lagos-based rap group. He subsequently met producer K-Solo in Mafoluku, Oshodi, Lagos, Nigeria, who produced his first major hit record single “Dem Mama” after hearing him perform the acapella version.
Describing the song in an interview posted on August 2013, Timaya stated that “Dem Mama” was an account of the 1999 destruction of Odi, a river side community of Bayelsa State in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. According to him, Soldiers were hunting down militants and where alleged to have killed eight policemen. The village was burnt down and numerous people killed. According to him, he bravely tackled the issue years later and won instant street credibility for his boldness.
In 2010, he appeared on the song “Kokoroko” by female gospel artist Kefee, which went on to win the Best Collaboration of the Year at the 2010 Headies Awards. In 2011, Timaya was appointed a Peace Ambassador by the Interreligious and International Federation for World Peace (IIFWP). Dr. Hak Ja Haan Moon, co-founder of the IIFWP, stated that he is one of those individuals whose lives exemplify the ideal of living for the sake of others, and who dedicate themselves to practices which promote the founding ideals of the IIFWP.
In 2007, Timaya released his first album True Story, his second album Gift and Grace was released in 2008, his third album De Rebirth was released in 2010, his fourth album Long Life N Prosperity was released in 2011, his fifth album Upgrade was released in 2012 and his sixth album Epiphany was released in 2014.
Timaya in the cause of his career as a solo artiste have won several awards. In 2011, he won the Best Afro-Dancehall song “Plantain Boy” at the Nigeria Music Video Awards. In 2008, he won the Album of the Year “True Story” at the Headies Awards. In 2008 and 2009 respectively, he won Best Reggae/Dancehall Album, Best Collaboration of the Year, Artiste of the Year and Indigenous Artist of the Year at the Nigeria Entertainment Awards. In 2010, he won Best Collaboration of the Year at the Nigeria Entertainment Awards.
Timaya is currently one of the richest and most influential artiste in Nigeria with an estimated net worth of $7.8 million.
