Atiku Abubakar was the former vice President of Nigeria and Presidential candidate that lost to President Buhari during the 2019 general election. However, not many know what his home front looks like, but according to reports from sources close to the former Vice-President and two-time Presidential candidate, he has 26 children from his five wives.
In the book titled “Atiku – The Story of Atiku Abubakar” the former Vice President of Nigeria explains why he opted for polygamy as a young man. Atiku said: “I wanted to expand the Abubakar family. I felt extremely lonely as a child. I had no brother and no sister. I did not want my children to be as lonely as I was. This is why I married more than one wife. My wives are my brothers, my sisters, my friends and my advisers and they complement one another”.
Atiku Abubakar married his first wife named Amina Titi Atiku Abubakar secretly at the young age of 25 years old in December 1971 at the Ikoyi registry in Lagos, because her family opposed their union at that time. In January 1979, he married his second wife named Ladi Atiku Abubakar. In 1983, he married his third wife named Princess Rukaiyatu Atiku Abubakar, who is the daughter of the late Lamido of Adamawa.
In 1986, he married his fourth wife named Fatima Atiku Abubakar. He later divorced his second wife Ladi, and replaced her with another wife named Jennifer Iwenjora, who later became Jamila Atiku Abubakar after she was converted to Muslim.
Atiku Abubakar first wife gave birth to four children namely Fatima, Adamu, Halima and Aminu while his second wife, Hajia Ladi has six children namely Abba, Atiku, Zainab, Ummi, Mariam and Rukayatu. Atiku Abubakar third wife, Princess Rukaiyat had seven children namely Aisha, Hadiza, Aliyu, Asmau, Mustafa, Laila and Abdulsalaam.
His third wife Princess Rukaiyat is also the 13th child of current Lamido Adamawa. Atiku Abubakar fourth wife, Hajia Fatima has six children namely Amina, Mohammed and two sets of twins namely Ahmed and Shehu and another two sets of twins namely Aisha and Zainab. Atiku Abubakar fifth wife, Hajia Jamila has three children namely Abdulmalik, Zahra and Faisal.
