Obumneme Smash Ali and Nwachukwu Vast Ozioko popularly known as Bracket is a famous Nigerian duo singer, songwriter, recording artist, stage performer and models from Enugu State in the south eastern part of Nigeria. Bracket started as a three-man music group before a member called Bistop dropped out.
The duo are currently signed in to Ape Planet Records and are best known for releasing hit singles like Happy Day, Yori-Yori, No Time and Ada Owerri which received several positive reviews and airplay.
Vast and Smash popularly known as Bracket grew up in Nsukka, Enugu State in the south eastern part of Nigeria, where they used to attend campus shows while growing up.
Vast had a National Diploma in Mass Communication from the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT), Enugu and a Bachelor’s Degree in Mass Communication from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
While Smash had a National Diploma in Social Works from the Institute of Management and Technology, Enugu and a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
The history of how the group began has been mixed in several stories and allegations. Bistop, a former member of the group claimed to be the pioneer of the group after meeting Vast in a barbing salon back then in 1999. They performed and attended several shows together under the stage name “Furious BV”.
In a press release, Bistop said he left the group as a result of a misunderstanding between him, Vast, Smash and their former associate producer. He also went on to claim that Smash was not a member of the group until 2003 after he met Smash through a friend.
After the dropout of Bistop from the group, Vast and Smash decided to change their stage name from “Furious BV” to “Bracket”. After the rebranding of their stage name to “Bracket” Vast and Smash went further to release their first studio album “Happy Day” in 2006 which was successful.
After the success of their first studio album, Bracket released their second studio album “Least Expected” in 2009. Following the success of the second album, Bracket went further to release their third studio album “Cupid Stories” in 2011. Following the success of their third album, Bracket went further to release their fourth studio album “Alive” in 2015.
On 24th August 2013, Nwachukwu Ozioko, popularly known as Vast of Bracket, after seven months of undergoing treatment for Lymphoma, a type of cancer of the blood, was finally treated in Platinum Medical Centre in Wellington, London.
Bracket has released so many hit songs which include Happy Day, Yori-Yori, Me and You, Ada Owerri, Brother Wale, No Time, etc. Their music has received international recognition and acceptance by global audience.
In 2012, Bracket won the Artiste of the Year at the Headies Awards. That same year in 2012, Bracket received a honorary award from the city of Philadelphia at the African American Museum in Philadelphia in United States of America.
In 2013, Bracket was nominated for Best Indigenous Artist/Group at the Nigeria Entertainment Awards. That same year in 2013, they were nominated for Best Collaboration of the Year at the Nigeria Entertainment Awards. They are currently signed to Ape Planet music records.
Vast and Smash (Bracket) are currently one of the richest and most influential artiste in Nigeria with an estimated net worth of $7 million.
