The police in Niger State have arrested a 31-year-old man, Nasiru Musa, in connection with the killing of two kidnapped victims after payment of N13 million ransom in Tegina town, Rafi LGA of the state. It was gathered that the suspect, who allegedly conspired with several others to kidnap the victims and collect ransom, was arrested on August 28, 2022.
According to reports, the deceased victims Aminu Sani Garba, a health worker and Kasimu Lawan, a factory worker were among four residents kidnapped by bandits at a water factory in Tegina town, Rafi LGA of the state, on November 14, 2021.
The command’s spokesperson, DSP Wasiu Abiodun, in a statement on Tuesday, September 6, 2022 said: “It would be recalled that on 14/11/2021 at about 2:00 PM, suspected armed bandits invaded Tegina town in Rafi LGA of Niger state shooting sporadically into the air and abducted four persons into Kagara forest which include one Aminu Garba and others.
Upon the receipt of this information, the Command mobilized and drafted a combined team of tactical squad comprising of Anti-Kidnapping Unit, FIB tactical squad and vigilante members to the area. As a result of the sustained operational pressure on the hoodlums, two victims later escaped from the abductors, while the remaining two others were still in captivity including the said Aminu Garba. Unfortunately, the remaining two victims, That is Aminu Garba and one other were killed by the kidnappers after collecting a ransom of N13 million.
However, on 29/08/2022, based on technical intelligence, one Nasiru Musa aged 30yrs ‘m’ of Tegina town in Rafi LGA of the state was arrested within the town in connection with the crime. During interrogation, the suspect confessed to have conspired with one Lelwi presently at large who connected him with one Daji also at large and several others to kidnap the victims and collected the ransom. He claimed that he benefitted N200,000 only, from the crime proceed and he was also planning to kidnap the Council Chairman of Rafi LGA before his arrest.“
Also, two kidnappers terrorizing Umunneochi areas and the Enugu-Okigwe-Port Harcourt expressway have been caught by youths of Umuaku in collaboration with the Vigilante in Umuaku Isuochi in Umunneochi Local Government Area of Abia State. The kidnappers were caught on Tuesday morning within the boundary between Umuhu and Mbezi Mbala Isuochi.
It was gathered that the kidnappers who hail from Abakiliki in Ebonyi State were led by the indigene of the Umuaku Community, and were among the criminals constituting nuisance around the axis. Meanwhile, the Governor of Abia State Dr Okezie Ikpeazu has taken several security measures to tackle the incessant killings and kidnapping around the area.
He directed the speed up of security along Ihube to Isuochi road and tasked the Commissioner of Police in Abia State, Janet Agbede to mount up additional security checkpoints in the axis while restricting cows’ and herders’ movement along the area.
Also, security concerns have triggered an adjustment in official operating hours of United Bank of Africa (UBA) and Access Bank. In a separate email and social media messages sent to their customers, the two financial institutions cited different reasons for the decision, including insecurity.
The move may likely increase the long queues often experienced in ATM points. The banks, in a notification titled, ‘Adjusted Closing Time for Select Branches’ to its esteemed customers listed the branches and the states where it operates.
Access Bank, specifically, urged its customers to consider processing most of their transactions via its digital channels, stating: “You can simply process most of your transactions via our digital channels, as few of our Access Bank branches nationwide will be closed at 3:00 PM henceforth. Other branches will be open as usual from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and we promise to keep customers informed as it makes the changes.”
For UBA, it stated in a notification on Thursday, September 1, 2022 to customers that it was adjusting working hours in some of its branches to ensure the well-being of employees and customers alike.
The statement, titled ‘Notice of Bank Closure’, reads: “Please be informed that some of our branches will now close earlier for the safety of our customers and employees. Our digital channels will remain available to you 24/7.”
It was speculated that the bank’s action was due to terrorism threats, but a top source in the global bank submitted saying; “It was not because of terrorism, it was for security reasons.”
