Steve Onu popularly known as Yaw is a famous Nigerian stand-up comedian, on-air personality, actor, master of ceremony, event host, radio personality and all round entertainer. He was born on 24th August 1975 at the Island Maternity Hospital in Lawanson, Surulere Local Government Area of Lagos in the south western part of Nigeria as the seventh child in a family of 10 children. He is currently 43 years old.
Yaw is a native of Awka in Anambra State in the south eastern part of Nigeria. He grew up at no. 65 Mamba Street Lawanson, Surulere, Lagos State, Nigeria. He lost one of his sisters to the cold hand of death when he was still a boy.
He attended Osimoye Primary School in Surulere, Lagos State, Nigeria and completed his primary school education at Obele Primary School in Surulere, Lagos State, Nigeria and obtained his First School Leaving Certificate.
After completing his primary school education, Yaw proceeded to St. Ann Secondary School in Surulere, Lagos State, Nigeria and obtained his West African Senior School Certificate in 1993.
In 1995, Yaw obtained a Diploma in Radio, Television and Film Production from the Lagos State University. In 2000, he obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Theater Arts from the Lagos State University, majoring in Theater Marketing.
He is at present an On-Air Personality at 95.1 Wazobia FM. Yaw is versatile in all ramification. He is currently the host of the popular early morning talk programme “Make Una Wake”. He has starred in over 50 stage plays both in the United Kingdom and Nigeria respectively. He has definitely brought some intelligence and humor to the Nigerian entertainment industry.
He has over 14 years of experience and has worked with BBC and has been starred in several television series and soap opera which include Twilight Zone, Flatemates, Dear Mother and Fuji House of Commotion. He has also starred in over 50 stage plays both in the United Kingdom and Nigeria respectively.
He has worked with prominent directors like Binda Ngazolo, Ben Tomoloju, Ahmed Yerima and Dr Sola Fosudo to name a few. Before making it to the entertainment scene, Yaw was once a bus conductor. He started his radio presenting job at Wazobia FM in 2007, working as a morning on-air radio personality.
He is also a cast of the award-winning Pidgin English radio drama series titled “Story Story” by the British Broadcasting Corporation. Since joining the Nigerian Radio Station in 2007, he has won over 7 awards, one of which was Best On-Air Personality in Nigeria.
He mentioned during an interview that he draws his inspiration from God and the society. He also mentioned in an interview that one of his fond memories that he recalls from his childhood was the beatings he used to get from his mother.
Yaw has received several awards and still counting. He won the Best On-Air Personality for Mode Men Awards and City People Entertainment Awards among others. He has also won award organized by Opa Williams for Best TV Actor (Comic).
Yaw is inspired by the likes of Basketmouth, Ali Baba and so many others. People call him a funny person, but during an interview, he stated that it is because everything around us is funny. According to him, life would have been so dull if nothing is funny.
He was once an ice water seller, who hawks ice water on the street of Lagos. Today Yaw is not just a successful on air-personality, but also an international stand-up comedian.
Yaw is currently one of the richest and most influential standup comedian, radio presenter and on-air personality in Nigeria with an estimated net worth of $300,000.
